An anterior cruciate ligament injury is extreme stretching or tearing of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in the knee. A tear may be partial or complete.ACL injuries are common, costly and potentially debilitating. It is estimated that 95,000 new ACL injuries occur each year (1 in every 3000 persons). Those individuals who suffer an ACL injury and undergo surgical intervention face a lengthy rehabilitation process ranging from 6 to 36 months. Unfortunately, surgical intervention does not ensure a return to previous activity levels. Only 75 percent of these individuals return to their previous activity levels.
ACL surgery uses Autografts, (which is a tissue or organ that is grafted from one tissue or organ in your body, and subplants that same tissue somewhere else, in your body). For example, ACL surgeries can use a patient's own hamstring or patellar tendon, in place of the torn ACL.After having an ACL surgery, there is still a chance that a person can reinjure their anterior cruciate ligament. If this does occur, a person can undergo a second ACL reconstruction. A bone graft may be required, because of holes in the bone, at this point.
Almost 3 out of four ACL injury occurs when players are landing or turning. If your knees are bent instead of straight, the risk of injury is greatly reduced according to a report in the JAAOS (Journal of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons)
Physical therapy is always suggested in the strengthening of the muscles around the knee and to supply excess or extra support. Much attention should be made to the changes to the leg a few days post surgery. Physical therapy focuses on strengthening and stretching the quadriceps and inside hamstrings. A physical therapist can educate you how to protect your knee in sports and daily activities. Physical therapy commence straight away to speed up healing and to make the patient enjoys the full use of the joint. Knee replacements today last approximately 20 years in 85-90% of well-chosen patients. Physical therapy and strengthening normally begin or start a couple of weeks post-operatively.
Avoiding ACL injury
So you want to avoid an ACL injury and still come out great. Land and turn with caution. Almost 3 out of four ACL injury occurs when players are landing or turning. If your knees are bent instead of straight, the risk of injury is greatly reduced according to a report in the JAAOS (Journal of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons). That is pretty obvious though as you will feel lower jerking impact.
A Conservative Approach
Knee supports can be invaluable to people who have knee problems and wish to take a conservative approach toward healing. In this case, a knee brace will help stabilize your knee from any incoming hits that may further insult your knee. Not only that, a well designed knee support can help reduce your pain and provide the meanigful support that will prevent you from making excessive movements in the future that can hurt you.
